Intermedia Composition – Russia - Switzerland 2018
Intermedia composition for the Moscow Contemporary Music Ensemble and the Duo Niggli-Hug
The first resonating chamber is our mouth. It is soft and hard at the same time, clearly formed and yet extremely malleable. Phonetic studies and the richly varied, sometimes dramatic shapes of the oral cavity with its tongue strokes, air currents and eddies during sound production are visualised through Son-Icons (sound drawings) in graphite and red chalk. The result is a 20-metre-long drawing and animated video. The art installation becomes a spatial score for the musicians, who perform in and with the sound topography of the dynamic interior spaces.
With their instruments and their voices, the Moscow Contemporary Music Ensemble and the Niggli-Hug Duo create partly hybrid sounds ranging from the near-natural to the furthest extreme. The music, notated and shaped by Son-Icons and Interaction Notation, moves between composition and improvisation, between highly individual timbre and universal sound formations. A space of sonic encounters and exchange emerges.
Son-Icons form the core of Hug's musical-artistic work. With Son-Icons, Hug has also developed an audio-visual method for intermedia compositions. The interaction between sound and visual stimuli, in analogue form drawn on paper, or animated on the video score, is a magnet for the senses and a form-giving element for the musicians, which can be experienced directly by the audience.
